The motto is a test rather than an ornament. Before we act we ask what the decision will look like in thirty years, whether the business is the stronger for it, and whether the people who depend on it would recognise the company that made the choice.
Profit alone has never been a sufficient answer. What we are stewarding is the standing of this company and the businesses within it, and neither is worth keeping unless it outlasts us.
